OJSC “Onezhskii LDK” is situated in Arkhangelsk region, at the coast of the White Sea, in the city of Onega. The mast forest of White Sea has been being exported even since Ivan Groznyi, and sawing works began on shore of Onega already in VIII century, when at Pon’ga and Anda rivers first saw mills working for export appeared.

Onezhsky LDK is an effective and sustainable enterprise. Full-scale modernization decision was made by shareholders in 1999 – to build new workshop for a short period of time till 2001. At first sawn timber storehouse was almost built anew it was equipped by modern sorting line “FinScan” (Sweden) with a system of automatic measuring of geometric parameters of a log. This permitted to accept the whole incoming sawn timber directly at sorting line.

On December, 14, 2001 new sawmilling workshop was opened on the basis of Finnish equipment. So Onezhsky LDK doubled sawn-timber output in terms of per one worker. In 2006 new drying capacities were set into operation that let to abandon atmospheric drying.

Onezhsky LDK actively participate in saturation of enterprises with wood harvesting equipment that ensures a stable growth of raw sawn-timber supply. At that the mill processes almost the whole sawn-timber volume logged in Onezhsky region.

History

  • 1911: a Norwegian Bake and a swede Vig built “Dal’nii” timber mill;
  • 1923–1928: concession «Rus’norvegoles» was established;
  • 1928: State Onezhskii Sawmill #32 was built;
  • 1932 – Onezhsky saw mill #33 was built;
  • 1997 – “Onega” trademark was elaborated and became well-known in all countries that have ever been supplied with its products;
  • 1999 – modernization program was developed;
  • 2000 – the first out of three bark and wood residues boilers was launched;
  • 2001 – new modern sawn-timber production was opened;
  • 2006 – new drying unit was set into operation;
  • 2006-2007 – the boiler-house was built for the town at own expenses. It required credit involvement. This boiler-house solved energy crisis in Onega town and permitted Onezhsky LDK to convert wood residues.

Ecology and certification

OJSC “Onezhskii LDK” pays great attention to ecology and environmental issues. All mill’s products are certified.

Ecology management system of international standard ISO 14001 was introduced at the mill in 2003. In 2006 the mill has successfully went through certification according to new version of the standard.

WWF (World Wildlife Fund) gave to Onezhsky LDK the mark “The most ecological company in its complex”.

Starting with 2003 “Expert-RA” rating agency has been awarding OLDK with the highest rating among enterprises of Russian Wood Industry Complex — “eco A+” — that implies a high level of ecological responsibility and environmental activity’s transparency. The rating of such level is awarded only to three enterprises of Russian forest complex.

According to state policy principles of wastes treatment there was developed an ecological program for wood residues utilization at the enterprise. According to this program in 2004 and 2005 respectively mazut boilers were demounted and wood residues boilers were installed. In 2006 within the framework of Kyoto protocol Onezhskii LDK took part in the construction of town wood residues boiler.

Sustainable forest use policy is being implemented at the mill. Voluntary forest certification under FSC system is one of the most efficient approaches towards sustainable forest management that permits to conserve biodiversity and productivity of the forests by inexhaustible use. Onezhskii LDK, one of the first in Russia, proceeded to forest certification. The Head of FSC’s Russian office, Ptichnikov A.V. named it the leader of certification in Russia. Its first certificate Onezhsky LDK got on June, 3, 2003 for one of its timber enterprises. In 2005 its four timber enterprises got FSC FM/COC certificates at once. In 2005 Onezhsky LDK got FSC-certificate for the whole “supply chain”.
