Investlesprom: First Russian light-weight coated paper is produced by unique technology

Friday, 28 May 2010

On May, 26 an official report was made about expert review results of regular tests made to the coated paper created within Investlesprom’s projects “Vologda paper manufacture” and “LWC-Kama” on May, 20-21 in Moscow at polygraphic complex “Pushkin square”. Manufactured by the unique technology developed by Investlesprom’s specialists and produced at pilot units of “Metso” in Finland the paper has successfully passed trial printing and stitching tests. As it was noted in the report the samples of new grades of paper with a nominal name “LWC Nano” of 60 g/sq.m. weight and “MWC Film Gloss” of 90 g/sq.m. demonstrated high strength and optic properties.

According to assertion of Andrey SULEIKOV, first deputy general director, JSC “Polygraphic complex “Pushkin square” (PCPS), presented samples got positive assessment both in laboratory and in the course of printing and post-printing works. At the assessment of tested papers’ quality PCPS’s specialists were guided by technical properties of the best global paper samples of the corresponding class and we can say that MWC Film gloss and LWC Nano papers’ tests passed successfully. The product has all preconditions to be competitive to the best global samples.

Ari LEKHTINEN, coated paper production manager, PPI division, JSC “Investlesprom”, believes that the paper quite corresponding to global analogues in high quality papers segment will have a range of advantages that will let Investlesprom group’s enterprises to create and occupy its unique niches at the coated papers market.

Commenting test results, Sergey MALKOV, technical development director, PPI division, JSC “Investlesprom” noted in particular:

- Investlesprom specialists haven’t simply developed production technology but created a unique paper composition. The main raw material for paper-base production will be bleached chemical thermo-mechanical pulp from birch wood. This will be the first in the world production of coated paper from birch stuff.

The “monopoly” of traditional production of paper-base for coating from softwood is breaking down. At that new perspectives open in front of usage of deciduous grades of raw wood that until recently was not converted a lot in Russia. Without exaggeration – this is a strategic breakthrough for domestic pulp and paper industry.

Paper tests participant Petri TOLONEN, Vice-president, “Metso” company thanked the management of Investlesprom group for the provided possibility to participate in the technical tests of printing at PCPS and underlined:

- Last year our company took part only in production and testing of paper-base. This time we went through the whole technological chain, starting with chips. One of the surprises for us was the discovery that proposed technology removes barriers between paper produced from pure pulp and mechanical fiber. Formerly we, in Metso, considered the usage of great deal of birch BCTMP in the composition as almost an impossible task. We, in Metso, are veryglad with theresults. The tests confirmed: the concept of coated papers production at Investlesprom group of enterprises will have competitive advantages in cost price and quality.

The next important phase of the complex light-weight coated paper production organization investment project of Investlesprom group will become PPM “Kama” production start-up.

Approximately in the Q4 this year first Russian light-weight coated paper produced by unique technology will start to be produced on industrial scales for Russian and foreign consumers.
